Palangkaraya, the Charming City in Central Kalimantan

Palangkaraya is a city in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Situated in the third largest island in the world, Borneo Island. Palangkaraya famous for its wildlife.  The area of the city dominated by forest, included the protected forest and nature conservation area. Its wildlife is popular throughout the world. Palangkara also popular for being the “future capital” of Indonesia. The first president of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno, initiated to move the capital of Indonesia from Jakarta to this city. It is said that this issue still being dicussed until now. The geography of this city said much better than Jakarta. Here is no volcanoes and and less potency to the earthquake. Palangkara also 3,6 times wider than Jakarta. The city also in a strategic position, situated in Kalimantan (Borneo) Island, in the center of Indonesian archipelago.

There are some interesting places to visit in this city. If you want to enjoy the wildlife sense of the city, you can try the Sabangau National Park, which is administratively located and spans in three regions, Katingan regency, Pulang Pisau regency and the city of Palangkaraya. It is the 600,000 hectares of tropical peat-swamp forest in southern of the Central Kalimantan. The place is rich in biodiversity. It is also the home for the famous and endangered species of Orangutan. Tangkiling Hill is a beautiful area with the lovely scenery around. It is very attractive place to be visited and only about 30 minutes from Palangkaraya by using land transportation.



The Isen Mulang held each year to enliven the anniversary of the Central Kalimantan, it is where the cultural events and traditional competitions are held and became the tourist attraction. Usually this festival is between 19-24 May each year. The regencies in Central Kalimantan also regularly held some attractive festivals, such as Buntok, Tamiyang Layang, Sukamara, Jukung Hias and Mangkikit festival. Its traditional cloth and dances are popular in Indonesia, and can be the attraction of the city.

Palangkaraya, the capital city is a must see place. The city is home for the  historical and cultural collection from all over Central Kalimantan. Some other regencies also can be good options for the travelers. The villages in Central Kalimantan are really unique and will escape you from the boredom of the urban sense. The city is easy to access. It can be reached from Jakarta via both sea and air transportation. Tjilik Riwut Airport is the airport in Palangkaraya, only about 5 km from the center of the city.
