One of the historical mosques in Indonesia is Great Mosque in Demak, Central Java. This is the oldest mosque in Java, was built in 1487 by Wali Songo, nine Muslim saints who spread Islam in Java Island. The characteristic of this mosque is its roof which is traditional Javanese mosque style. Unlike in Middle East, the roof is not a dome, but tiered and supported by four saka guru teak pillars. This is an acculturation between Islam and Javanese culture. Dome mosque appeared in Java three four hundred years later in 19th century. In this mosque surrounding, there is cemetery complex for Muslim saints in Java which people can capture with their camera. There is also Great Mosque Museum in which people can learn the history of the mosque and spreading of Islam in Java Island.

This mosque lies in the heart of Demak City, about 25 kilometers from Semarang and can be reached by bus or car. The mosque and cemetery opens every day for 24 hours while museum is open from 8am to 4pm every day. It is free to enter this mosque and museum but you can give money voluntarily for its maintenance. Don’t disturb people who are praying in this mosque.
